Book Overview:
In the highly anticipated follow-on from his book ‘Start with Why’, Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek, is an optimistic and inspiring expansion on his ideas at an organizational level, looking at why some leaders and their teams are successful, and some are not.
“Leadership is not a rank, it is a responsibility. Leadership is not about being in charge, it is about taking care of those in your charge.”
Why We Recommended It:
In the book, Sinek explores the concept that “determining a company’s WHY is crucial, but only in the beginning. Explaining that the next step is how do you get people on board with your WHY? How do you inspire deep trust and commitment to the company and one another?” While the book looks at companies, the same can most definitely be said for leadership and creating a successful team culture within sport. The book looks at the Marine Corps who have found a way to build a culture in which men and women are willing to risk their lives for each other, because they know others would do the same for them. It’s not brainwashing; it’s actually based on the biology of how and when people are naturally at their best.
In sport, while it may not be a matter of life and death, teams should adopt this supportive mentality, where individuals would be more motivated to take bigger risks, because they’d know their team members and coach would back them up, no matter what. At Athlete Assessments, we’re strong believers that developing a strong team culture starts from within, and when we take care of our people, they in turn will take care of us.
